Collect teaching and learning materials
Balwadi units require a variety of teaching
and learning materials including educational
toys, charts, flash cards etc. These can
be purchased separately by HUL from non-profit
organizations that specialize in creating
learning tools for pre-school children.
There are several such NGOs including
Sutradhar (www.sutradhar.com) and Maya
Organics located in Bangalore. Moreover,
employee collection drives can be held
on an ongoing basis to collect items such
as children’s toys, unused stationary,
one-sided paper, books and several other
goods that prove very useful in the learning
environment.
Art
and craft and singing and dancing sessions
An active employee-volunteering programme
could be developed that would be based
on fun activities that can be done with
children. Volunteers can conduct special
sessions like art and craft, singing and
dancing etc.
This plan can include visiting a Balwadi
one Saturday every month and:
• Interacting with the children
• Organizing localized events like
painting competitions and craft activities
• Conducting English speaking classes
Organising
Quiz
Employees can conduct other activities
in the library like arranging a small
quiz for children, slide shows on some
topic of interest, conducting some small
scientific demonstration, painting competition,
story telling, craftwork e.g. Puppet making
/ puppetry, Origami, Papier Mache.

Organising visits / trips for Children
to:
a) Planetarium / VITM (Physics / Astronomy)
b) Lalbagh / Cubbon Park or any of the
Forest Dept / Horticulture Parks within
Bangalore (ecology, birdwatching, botany,
insects.)

Your collections can include:
• Books for children between the
ages of 4-14.
• Reference Books like Tell Me Why,
World Book
• Magazines such as National Geographic
• Comic books like Amar Chitra Katha
• Toys and Games such as carom,
monopoly etc
• Educational CD Roms
• One sided computer paper
• Unused note books
• Art items such as crayons, paint,
colour pencils
• Unused stationary such as pens,
pencils, sharpeners, erasers
